Artist Catrin Welz-Stein was born in Weinheim, Germany.During her studies in Graphic Design in Darmstadt, Germany, Welz-Stein  was introduced to the fields of photography, illustration and digital image processing.These gave her a new perspective on the possibilities to visualize ideas and to transport them into images.Welz-Stein started to create digital art by combining historical paintings, curiosities and fairytale-like illustrations into surreal and sensual images that are both familiar and alien at the same time.The artist tears apart old photos, pictures and illustrations, then meticulously combines them in Photoshop to create her own unique image.Although some conservative art critics may turn up their noses on digital art, Welz-Stein defends her craft with passion.“Yes, of course it is art even if it is done on a computer. Jungho Lee is a surrealistic illustrator and artist based in Seoul, Korea.Lee studied graphic design at Hongik University in Seoul.He has worked as an illustrator for various media since 2007.

The artist creates surreal illustrations incorporating books into our everyday surroundings.

Lee hand draws his images with charcoal and watercolors before scanning and digitally layering them to reach the desired illusory effect.These whimsical illustrations  incorporate the beauty of books into everyday environments, creating thoughtful, dream-like scenes.Lee’s books work as an open door, a star-filled lake, a morning slice of pie or an airplane’s wing.More of Jungho Lee‘s whimsical work can be found at http://www.leejungho.com and https://www.facebook.com/ejungho.

This is what Creativity is all about.

This is what friendship is all about.

Graphic Design Artist and Photographer John Lemke has been a friend of mine since I started my last job 19 years ago. He was a catalog artist, I was a catalog coordinator. Between us (and a bunch of other people) we made catalog magic. He laid out the pages, I proofread the pages. 

Both of us have gone on to bigger and better things.

This includes Art.

I highlighted John’s graphic artworks back in 2015 and his photography in 2021. I also published a boatload of his work in the Gallery in August 2015 and December 2021. 

John is a friend but also a phenomenal artist. His work touches spots deep inside that have no description, no explanation. His photography makes me feel good.

And this is what today’s blog is about.

Sunday Evening Art Gallery — Eric Ross Bernstein

Eric Ross Bernstein is a freelance artist and designer based in Los Angeles.After graduating with a degree in architecture from Cornell University, he co-founded the design collective Hither Yon, then worked as an architect at Studio Jeppe Hein.Bernstein’s graphic novel Parallels explores fundamental human experiences like love, anxiety, language, and memory.

The art in Parallels chronicles the travels of an introspective wanderer in search of personal truths in the alternate realities of his parallel selves.“There is a place where mountains blow in the wind, where memories are floating orbs bobbing above the head, where words expire when left unspoken,” Bernstein reflects.In ten fantastical fables, the narrator sets out to illuminate the interconnectedness of the multiverse while seeking answers to his deepest questions.“My illustrations and their accompanying stories reimagine fundamental human experiences like thoughts, language, bliss and fear.”Bernstein’s illustrations are three dimensional, other-worldly, and yet personal, touching each viewer differently.

Moscow-based illustrator Maxim Shkret conjures the flowing hair of people and the tangled fur of beasts in this lovely ongoing series of digital illustrations.Mixing a unique method of 3d modeling with carefully applied shadows, each piece evokes the form of a paper-like sculpture.One of his key flairs is lavish swoops and sweeps that detail his 3D designed images, giving that captivating look of something expertly sculpted with such conviction.Shkret believes that advancing technology is a powerful tool that can be utilized to bring the most dreamy and clever ideas to full realization.And this ideology certainly shows in his endeavors through the stunningly eccentric concepts that unravel before viewers’ eyes.“Being a strong advocate of experiments on the intersection of digital and physical, I firmly believe that imagination is free from any constraints and boundaries,” Shkret says. “It is a powerful engine that fuels the creative process allowing to propel the aesthetics of the visual art to new heights.”

Everyone takes pictures these days.

With cameras as part of most phones, the world is out there just waiting to be photographed.

John Lemke is the sort of photographer who sees the world through a little different lens.

A graphic designer by trade, John has used his camera to find unusual angles and exposures from the world around him.

Already featured on my Sunday Evening Art Gallery, John continues to move forward on the artistic trail.

He uses no photography tricks — just his imagination — to share the beauty of the world around him.

Lemke believes anyone can find inspiration for art. All you need to do is go outside and open your eyes.

There is cool stuff everywhere.

I love this kind of thinking.
