Matt Underwood (1971 -) is both painter and printmaker working in woodblock.
He studied art and art history at Salisbury College of Art completed his HND in illustration with a distinction at Carmarthenshire College of Art.
Wood block is a relief matrix, which means the areas to show ‘white’ are cut away, leaving the image to show in ‘black’ at the original surface level.
The block is cut along the grain of the wood, then inked and brought into firm and even contact with paper to achieve an acceptable print.
For his color prints, multiple blocks are used, each for one color, overprinting with may producing further colors on the print.
In recent years he has returned to his interest in natural history, producing eye-catching works in collage, mixed media and oil.

I am always amazed at the result of woodpressing art. Even though the design is cut into wood it still comes out smooth and precise.

How wonderful and especially right now, when the flowers are gone. Interesting work and it’s very gentle and bold at the same time.
