Sophia Narrett is a painter and embroiderer who explores fantasy, desire, and identity in her work.

Narrett received her MFA in Painting from the Rhode Island School of Design and a BA with Honors in Visual Art from Brown University. She has attended the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture

Narrett employs the slow and meticulous process of embroidery in response to the increasingly fast pace of contemporary media.

The artist begins with a narrative, then builds reference collages using hundreds of images she gathers online. This process can take weeks, as each character and element of the setting is formed from multiple images spliced together.

Narrett then begins to embroider from the reference images. The translation into thread creates further shifts and hopefully imbues the physical object with some of the emotion in the narrative.

Using techniques often associated with domestic craft, Narrett creates complex, cinematic scenes filled with figures who seem to move through moments of intimacy, pleasure, and reflection.
