Sunday Evening Art Gallery — Jan Campbell

Artist Jan Campbell lives in County Mayo in West Ireland.

Campbell is an artist that makes little handheld totems, pendants and other mystical figurines out of avocado pits. She carves the seeds when they are still fresh and soft, and allows them to dry and harden into something that looks almost wooden.Campbell’s motifs recall woodland characters in meditative states, surrounded by layered leaves or curling spirals or powerful feminine symbols.

A self taught artis, Jan feels connected to earlier human beings when she practice her carvings.

She improves her skills by instincts and intuition, making each sculpture personal and unique.

There is an earthiness to her carvings that instantly connects her with the world around her.

  1. Wonderfully gorgeous and imaginative pieces of crafting, Claudia … I shall be more gently judicious next time I throw out an avocado pit … 🥰😊

    1. I was always told they’re bad for you. From the web: “No, you should not eat avocado pits. Although they contain antioxidants and helpful plant compounds, health groups like the California Avocado Commission do not recommend eating them. Pits contain natural toxins and hard-to-digest fibers that have not been proven safe for human consumption. Opinions are mixed on social media where some users blend them into powders, but health experts advise sticking to the safe, nutritious fruit flesh”
