Mortality Part Two

Every time I come in to write a blog something sidetracks me.

Normally I have no problem with sidetracks — they are part of everyone’s life.

But the loss last week of another friend tends to sidetrack me in ways I hate handling.

Acceptance.

A friend of mine passed away from complications of sepsis after cancer surgery. She was really my husband’s cousin’s wife’s mother, but that doesn’t matter. She was still a friend.

Complications rise because we will be out of town for her Celebration of Life. That makes it suck even more.

I look out at the hibiscus and geraniums blooming on the deck outside the window and realize she’ll never enjoy little things like this. No more spaghetti nights, no trips with her grandkids, no more loud and crazy family get togethers.

I’m done talking about this today. I know you’re all here with me, and while we acknowledge all the blah blah about life and death and everything in-between, I thought I’d bring some hope to those who still are here, doing our best.

  5. I’m sorry you lost another friend. It’s never easy
    We are leaving our garden at the beginning of the production peak to drive my 92 year old dad to New Jersey to see his 87 year old sister. 3 days to travel there. 3 days there. We plan to power drive home in 2 days. Bad timing for such an important journey. I dont want either to be the “survivor “ with regrets. I don’t want the guilt of not doing it. I think we all wish we had one more time with the ones who die before we do.

    1. I think part of our reward in life is giving so that others find happiness too. You are wonderful to drive your dad to see his sister. After all, what do we have left in this world but love? Even if it’s an effort to others. I had good times with my friend — she left the whole family with great memories. That’s all we can ask for.
