I’m Always Confused

I’m sitting in front of my living room  window, watching it snow … and snow … and snow, devilishly thinking I’m glad I’m retired and don’t have to go anywhere today.

Good day for computer work or craft work or reading a book, right?

I wanted to add a new book to my site for a free download to coincide with the blog I  wanted to post, but I have no idea how to keep track of downloads.

WordPress instructions insists it’s not hard. Just download Google Analytics and connect it to your blog.

Yes. Just like take a sailboat from New Jersey across the ocean to Monaco. Possible, but highly improbable.

I have never been the sharpest tool in the shed, but I’ve always been able to grasp the basics. I’m still a good and careful driver, know how to follow recipes, and set up my Square Reader to take card payments.

But some things are now becoming over my head.

Way over my head.

These days I often have to ask how to do something a few times before I “get it”, which is pretty normal for my age and sparkling mental state. I don’t mind as much as others may.

But I have gotten to the point that it’s almost impossible to understand more complicated things. Football averages plus or minus. How to fix most anything. Adding Google Analytics. It all blurs together like those dizzying whirlpools in bright colors.

Do you ever get this way? What do you do about it?

Some things I plainly give up on. No Pain, No Gain, No Problem.

Some things I ask someone how to do and get the advice I need.

Some things I research on my own and almost figure it out myself.

And some things I just skip.

As I said earlier, I’ve never been the sharpest tool in the shed. On occasion I’ve not even been in the shed. But that’s alright.

I find there is always someone around to help you out — either to do it with you, find someone else to do it, or to pour you a cup of coffee while you deal  about it another day.

Which one will you pick?

  1. I feel exactly the same ! The things you can do with a computer or a cellphone are endless !!!! But we have a son and a grandson who are good to teach us. And bit by bit we learn more and do things we never tried before, sometimes we love it and sometimes we don’t, but we try our best to keep up, if you don’t you get lost in the end as the governement and the banks, shops…..demand you follow up on the new stuff. But I feel for the people who can’t do all this, there is no mercy for them and that is horrible.

  2. When it comes to technical stuff, I blame the people who write the instructions. Even with my ME/CFS brain fog, I still can follow instructions if they’re clearly written. The problem is that these technical people presume a certain level of pre-knowledge, or they just can see that the instructions are too complicated for less technical people. Technical instructions should always be written by people who don’t have any technical knowledge.

    1. Absolutely! Ever try and figure out instructions from Far Eastern Lands? Its amazing they get half their English right. Most times it’s enough to put things together, but if I fall I call someone tech savy (like my son) to help me up!

  3. What often gets in my way is that I just plain old don’t want to learn anymore technology. Got rid of my cell phone as well. I enjoy real books not screen downloads. No social media either. Have a laptop to visit here and there. So far I haven’t seen all of the available gadgets making anyone happier , healthier or more creative. I know I’m in the minority and don’t care. Pour that coffee and watch the snow.

    1. Yep! I’m watching snow with you! The more I become aware of technology the more I want to get away from it. I suppose that indicative of an older personality. I’d rather learn about the historical sites in Paris or how to make shrimp and lobster sauce!

  4. Perhaps it comes with maturity. I have found that I spend much more time tossing stuff aside rather than struggling to conquer it. Or I ask my hub. He is a tech genius. I am lucky that way.

This year, I decided that I would try to only spend my energy on the things that I am passionate about…and that doesn’t include having to spend days on You Tube watching videos figuring out how to properly deal with the SEO on my blog. 🙂

    Cheers!

    1. Ha! We are cosmic mates! I would like to keep closer tabs on my tentacled extensions, but I either don’t understand it or don’t care enough about it to pursue said education. And WordPress does a pretty good job on tallying visits and comments, so I ‘m content.

  5. Google Analytics… I have heard about it but, what does it do?
I feel the same. At my age (not retired yet, unfortunately) when I see something complicated I just have this urge to run away.
I know I am becoming lazy, but you know what? I no longer care.

    1. You’re not being lazy — you’re being realistic! You are most likely a more creative sprite than a technical sprite! Google Analytics is supposed to keep track of visits to your website, downloads, and sales (if you sell product on your site). I tend to see myself as more on the creative side. Never been much of a technical sprite….
