Born in 1951 in Fort Belvoir, Virginia, Robert Mickelsen apprenticed with a professional lampworker for two years in the mid-seventies and then sold his own designs at outdoor craft fairs for ten years.

Mickelsen began crafting glass art back in 1974, driven by a fascination that quickly became a lifelong obsession.

His sculptures melt the boundaries between fire, light, and imagination—turning molten glass into forms that feel alive.

Every piece he creates holds a strange mix of power and tenderness, glowing with emotion and movement that seem almost unreal.

Using a process called lampworking—where rods and tubes of glass are melted by a specialized torch—Mickelsen sculpts mesmerizing forms that defy logic.

In recent years, he’s also embraced digital design through Blender, fusing old-school craftsmanship with futuristic imagination.
