Albert Paley (-1944) is a metal artist known for his monumental architectural ironwork and sculptures.
Initially starting out as a jeweler, Paley has become one of the most distinguished and influential metalsmiths in the world.
Paley earned B.F.A. and M.F.A. degrees at Tyler School of Art and Temple University, in 1966 and 1969 respectively.
In 1969 he joined the faculty of the School for American Craftsmen at Rochester Institute of Technology, and the following year established gold-and metalsmithing studios in his Rochester home.
Paley was a highly successful jewelry artist in 1974 when he won the Renwick Gallery’s national design competition and was awarded the commission to design decorative metalwork doors for the gallery shop.
His Portal Gates sculpture opened the door to a new career for Paley, leading to numerous commissions and world renown for his monumental architectural ironwork and sculpture.
Within each of Paley’s works, three foundational elements stay true: the natural environment, the built environment, and the human presence.
The artist aims for the structure and form of his work to emotionally connect with our thoughts, creating a sense of empathy.
As he describes, “I try to achieve this through linearity, the dance of line as you walk around a piece.”
