Sunday Evening Art Gallery — Romare Bearden

Romare Howard Bearden  (1911 – 1988) was an American painter whose collages of photographs and painted paper on canvas depict aspects of American black culture in a style derived from Cubism.Considered one of the most important American artists of the 20th century, Bearden’s artwork depicted the African American culture and experience in creative and thought-provoking ways. After a year of studies in science and mathematics at Lincoln University in Pennsylvania, Bearden went on to study art and art education, including two years at Boston University, and graduated with a degree in education from New York University.Living in Harlem, he joined a Black artists group and became excited about modern art, particularly, Cubism, post-Impressionism and Surrealism.Bearden is best known for his photomontage compositions made from torn images of popular magazines and assembled into visually powerful statements on African American life.During the mid 1960s, Bearden felt he was struggling in his art between expressing his experiences as a Black man and the obscurity of abstract painting. He felt that abstraction wasn’t clear enough for him to tell his story.

He felt his art was coming to a plateau, so he started to experiment again. Combining images from magazines and colored paper, he would work in other textures such as sandpaper, graphite and paint.Bearden’s collage work has also been compared to jazz improvisation, as growing up during the Harlem Renaissance, he was exposed to many of the jazz greats. His images reflected some of the elements of jazz with its interplay among the characters and improvisation of the materials used.More of Romare Bearden’s influential works can be found at  https://beardenfoundation.org/.

Collage of Cats — My Kawaii Quarter (repost)

You know me — I am a texture junkie at times. Although I appreciate crafts of ALL kinds, there’s something about a 3D creation — slightly or overtly — that makes me stop and look a little longer.

One of the blogs I follow,  My Kawaii Quarteris full of wonderful kawaii drawings (defined as the culture of celebrating all things adorable and embracing fictional characters as the embodiment of positivity).

This particular blog, though — Collage of Cats — is about one of her art projects working on “chigiri-e ” (ちぎり絵), a traditional Japanese form of art which basically involves tearing up bits of special paper and gluing on paper to create a picturesque collage.

Her collage is full of straight and curved lines, texture, color, cats, and … did I say … texture?

Check out her site and see both kawaii and Chigiri-e  art in person!

Wow!

Okay okay!

I need to take a breath!

I’ve been catching up on my Reader reading these past few days, and have I found some interesting, spectacular, enjoyable art of all kinds from my artistic friends! I mean, WOW!

I can’t decide if I want to highlight all of them in one blog, do one blog a day for five days, one blog a week, give them full spread value, mix them up between my wit and wanton words …

I cannot believe I am so fascinated with the world of ART. I mean — it’s only a way to pass the time, isn’t it? It’s only using a pair of scissors to cut out a design.  A bit of glue and fabric on a piece of paper. A few brush strokes on a piece of canvas.

Of course, if you believe that, our relationship is tainted.

Seriously, though.

When one practices what they love over and over again, miracles happen. Little miracles, big miracles. Half miracles. Because it’s the soul, the ether, the cosmic power of life and beyond coming through.

Whew! Big words! Big emotions! Big exclamation points!

I think I’ll showcase them — and others — a couple of times a week.  There are sooooooo many people whose work I enjoy, and I’m always making new friends out there, too, whose work is ever inspiring. Just last week I highlighted Carsten Wieland and his creative painting videos — just sitting and watching him create is amazing.

I should make up a week about celebrating artists. But I’d be celebrating 52 weeks a year. And I already do that!

Keep on being inspired! Keep on Creating!

Fun Mixed Media Art

I love creative art!

My friend at SKETCHUNIVERSE reposted this delightful blog by Kawaii Corner. This particular blog is about creating a mixed media piece. The painting begins with a collage of Japanese language newspaper, tissues, paper napkins and even Christmas wrapping paper!

I think you will enjoy her creations! Go check her out!

Today some intuitive mixed media painting but not following a class this time. I thought to see how I could integrate what I’ve been learning so far and create independently.
