Annie French (1872 –1965) was a Scottish painter, engraver, illustrator, and designer.
French studied at Glasgow School of Art (GSA), from 1886-89, under the influential teacher Francis Newberry.
Known as one of the Glasgow Girls (a group of women artists and designers active in Glasgow at the turn of the twentieth century), French was well known as a watercolorist, illustrator, designer and teacher.
The artist excelled as an illustrator and developed an exquisite linear technique.
Influenced by both Art Nouveau and the Pre-Raphaelites, French’s delicate, patterned style worked well for the illustration of fairy tales and poems.
Her drawings are often quite small in scale, and are characterized by both an intricacy of composition and a delicacy of handling.
She produced children’s book illustrations, designs for greeting cards (for which she was perhaps best known in her lifetime), and independent compositions in watercolor on vellum.

I have been having fun, trying to figure out what each of these women was thinking… Wouldn’t they make awesome greeting cards? I’d be sending these out!
