Henri Matisse (1869 -1954), one of the undisputed masters of 20th century art, was a French artist, known for his use of color and his fluid and original draughtsmanship.
He was a draughtsman, printmaker, and sculptor, but is known primarily as a painter.
Matisse is commonly regarded, along with Pablo Picasso, as one of the artists who best helped to define the revolutionary developments in the visual arts throughout the opening decades of the twentieth century, responsible for significant developments in painting and sculpture.
Painting in the style that came to be known as Fauvism, Matisse continued to emphasize the emotional power of sinuous lines, strong brushwork and acid-bright colors.
Matisse’s work delighted and surprised his viewers with signature elements of saturated colors, flattened pictorial space, limited detail, and strong outlines.
From 1918 to 1930, he most frequently painted female nudes in carefully staged settings within his studio, making use of warm lighting and patterned backgrounds. He also worked extensively in printmaking during these years.
His mastery of the expressive language of color and drawing, displayed in a body of work spanning over a half-century, won him recognition as a leading figure in modern art.

I love Matisse ! He is a very interesting artist. He was the biggest rival of Picasso, they both liked eachothers work but they both wanted to do better than the other, I think this is really good, this will keep the to to better all the time.

I am looking forward to learning more about him. As I noted, I’m reading The Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas, and am loving Gertrude Stein and her relationships with early 20th century artists.

I studied the work of Matisse at the Getty Art Institute years ago and developed a real appreciation for his mastery of the expressive language of color. Thank you for refreshing my memory and displaying some of his marvelous work.

I really enjoyed reading about him and his work. As I said before, I didn’t realize he was as contemporary as he was, and reading about him taught me a little more about Fauvism (a style of painting with vivid colors and non-natural origins). I am intrigued you studied at the Getty Art Institute to begin with… what an experience that must have been.

If I’m not mistaken, when Lady in a Hat was so shocking to people, that they tried to tear it off the wall of the exhibit. Seems ridiculous today, but in those days, one was expected to follow the rules. I think Gertrude Stein bought it.

I am currently reading “The Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas” by Gertrude Stein, and I am just AMAZED at how many of the now-famous artists were her friends and colleagues in her Paris years. Fascinating.

I enjoy his work too! I didn’t realize, though, that he was a contemporary of Picasso!
