Life is a curious thing. We may complain about it, wonder about it, and celebrate it, but it is an individual experience. Yours and yours alone. And although we sometimes don’t have a choice as to which way it goes, we do have a choice as to how we experience those directions.
We all have things to be thankful for. Our children, our religion, and our friends are big sources of happiness. That’s obvious. But what about the little things that make us feel good over and over again?
Life is a series of moments. Here is my list of 10 things that bring joy to this humble experience I call life.
- Laying in bed in the early morning under stacks of blankets, listening to the wind howl outside.
- Sitting on the porch on summer evenings, watching thunderstorms roll in.
- Listening to live music.
- Warm bubble baths.
- Fresh oatmeal raisin cookies.
- Back scratches — both giving and receiving.
- The sounds of a summer evening.
- The twist near the end of the movie you really didn’t see coming.
- The end of a good book.
- Music. In the morning. When I clean house. In the evening. Mood music, new age jazz, hair bands. Whatever calls me.
What you need to do is make a top 10 list for yourself of what truly makes you happy. Don’t write down the givens — going to church, cuddling your grandkids. You already know those biggies. Write down the things that give you a heart flash. Write down the perfect moment.
We all have them.
You may think you only have 5 or 6 things to list. You may have 50. It doesn’t matter. Take a look at your life and find what really washes you clean and write it down. Then look at it when you feel blue.
Do what you can to make it a wish list. You may have to wait until summer to check off some of the feel goods, but know there are plenty of things within reach that can make you feel good about yourself and the world.
We only walk this way once. Why not feel good about it?

Ohhh…life IS good, isn’t it? You just have to take what you have and make it yours.

I agree. Well said.
I love your focus on the positive. You did what my blog was about today, “Bee a Joy-Bringer”… your list brought me joy. Thank you. I will work on creating one of my own, but top of the list today was being in a warm house while I watched the snow pile up outside and the temperatures drop to sub-zero with a wicked wind chill factor! Ah yes, and having a lovely fireplace to sit in front of – – – life is good! ❤
Thank you so much for responding with your own list. I love when someone tells me their version. I love love love your list…having your hair washed is kin to me getting my back scratched, sunsets and thunderstorms, dark chocolate and oatmeal raisin cookies..we are reflections of each other’s cosmic moments!
I love love love your favorites. There are things that touch our souls that outside our daily loves. The things you mention touch me, too. Maybe I should have said 20 things…..
I am so very happy to hear that!
Looks like you know what I like 😀
A few of mine:
The sound of a train whistle in the distance
A mourning dove’s call at dusk or dawn
Shimmering sunlight off the surface of a lake around 6a.m in June
That smell and feel of spring on those first few days of April
Tulips when the first break through the frosty ground in early spring
The constellations as they put in their yearly seasonal appearance
Laying in a field of tall grass on a warm summers day
Burning leaves in the fall
The refreshing taste of water directly from a natural spring
The sound of my children’s voices
What a great idea. Here’s my list without over thinking it. Thanks!!
1. The warmth of the sun on my skin
2. My dog’s head on my lap
3. Reading a good book
5. A smile from a stranger
6. A piece of dark chocolate
7. Having my hair washed
8. Watching the waves roll in
10. Music from the past
